Patents protect the functional aspects of the idea. In exchange for full disclosure, the inventor is granted a 20 year period in which they may prevent others from practicing the invention. Although inventors are free to author their own patents, the writing of a defendable and complete patent which can withstand close inspection during litigation is not a trivial process.
